Close call..

I went to bed on February 26th waiting to be woken up the next day by tsunami sirens bright and early at 11 a.m. According to the local news that ran well into the night, a tsunami was imminent in Hawaii and evacuation along the coast was mandatory. Naturally, I attached a 200mm and prepared to shoot some epic scenes of destruction upon the morrow...

The morrow?

The morning of February 27th fulfilled the promise of loud sirens, but no tsunami. The news coverage consisted of a thrilling live feed of the tide in Hilo Bay just slowly rising and falling for over three hours. Ultimately, culminating to nothing. It was like watching a screen saver. But after enduring hours of uncertainty and exaggerated media coverage, CNN fortunately gave us this gem...

Fail.

"How did Hawaii get down there?"
(Google it, Cusack. There's a high tech computer in front of you.)

In the end I can live without the pictures. After seeing this photo from the NWS, I had second thoughts about what could have happened and what actually did...

...Hawai'i dodged a bullet.

Hey Rick, do you know where the Hawaiian Islands are?

Of course. They're located within the Galapagos Islands. In the latitude... and longitude lines... hey, did you know I'm on TV?

I know. How much do they pay you?

Too much...

...
The resemblance is uncanny...
